King Rocker

July 3 5:45 pm

Feature Documentary | 2021 | UK | 90 min | Directed by Michael Cumming

Australian Premiere

Stand-up comedian and writer Stewart Lee tells the story of Robert Lloyd, legendary singer for The Prefects and the Nightingales, in a film described as “one of the best music documentaries of all time” by The Quietus.

On the surface King Rocker is the story of Robert Lloyd, vocalist and visionary, from his time in punk band The Prefects to the resurgence of the cult band The Nightingales.
But this is no ordinary music documentary, and alongside archive footage much of the story is told through a series of conversations between Stewart Lee and Robert Lloyd, as they talk in cafes, in pubs and on country walks.

King Rocker is not just a story about one man’s life and music, but also about history, identity, and a statue of King Kong, an unwanted and unloved piece of public art that played a role in both Lee and Lloyd’s lives.
Crucially, Lloyd, the witty and often self-depreciating musician, and Lee, the comedian and music fan, both understand the music documentary genre and the potential absurdity of their undertaking.

Director Michael Cumming (Brass Eye, Toast of London) deftly creates a film that is by turns hilarious and poignant, and ultimately a celebration of independent music and unrestrained creative vision.
