Special Jury Prize: SXSW
We’re suckers for quality American indies – we love the Duplass brothers, Lynn Shelton always had a place in our heart and Andre Bujalski was with us way back when. So, it’s with great pleasure we welcome into the family the substantial wit and craft of Cooper Raiff with this SXSW Grand Jury Prize winner (known in the US as Shithouse).
Written, directed by and starring Raiff, this off kilter romantic comedy of sorts tells the story of LA freshman and fish out of water Alex, who’s struggling to cope with college away from his mother and sister with whom he’s very close. Along with his chalk and cheese roommate, Alex meets Maggie at a party and… well I wouldn’t say sparks fly, but the two bounce off each other like balls on a pool table. But for Alex, things don’t quite work out as he may have thought or expected.
Along the way though we’re taken on a journey filled with spunky and sparkling dialogue, authentic performances and genuine emotion. Raiff pulls off an incredibly appealing work that’s hard not to bring a smile to the face and with a sly wink and wry smile, hands us what is potentially one of the indie gems of the year.
Screens with the short film Grazing Table.
