
Tony Jones is an Australian television news and political journalist, radio and television presenter, writer and documentary filmmaker. Tony began working for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) as a radio current affairs cadet working on the AM, PM and The World Today programs. In 1985, he joined the Four Corners program as a reporter. In 1986, Tony moved to SBS to present Dateline before returning to the ABC in 1987, reporting for Four Corners.
From 1999 to 2017, Tony presented Lateline, the ABC's flagship national current affairs television program, interviewing world leaders, leading politicians and key figures in public life. In 2011, he also commenced as the host of the ABC's Q&A political panel discussion show, continuing in that role until 2020.
Tony is one of Australia's most respected and recognisable journalists, winning numerous awards including four Walkley Awards. Crikey awarded him "Outstanding Media Practitioner of the Year" in 2005. He was also the writer of the ABC's acclaimed three-part documentary series Revelation, which examined sexual abuse by priests and brothers in the Catholic Church and won the Walkley Award for Documentary.
More recently, Tony has expanded his work into documentary filmmaking as director of Sentient, which premiered in competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and has since screened at numerous international film festivals. The film received the Audience Award for Documentary at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece.
Across a career spanning more than four decades, Tony has established himself as one of Australia's leading journalists, broadcasters and documentary storytellers.
