Mary’s a slacker who squats at her mother’s house and spends her time watching hentai under the bedsheets. During one of her rare visits to the communal laundry room, she runs into her new neighbor, who claims to be in possession of an extraterrestrial glockenspiel. Intrigued, she asks to see the equipment. A couple of wash and rinse cycles later she’s no longer the same Mary. She discovers that she carries a parasite as tenacious as a tapeworm, an entity that devours her from the inside out and transforms her into a monstrous womb that spews out intergalactic acid. In short, Mary is pregnant, and she’s not happy about it at all…
This is the new body horror phenomenon that made everyone’s stomach turn at Sundance. Not only is this a distant relative to the early works of Peter Jackson, it also doesn’t show any visual restraint, while nicely tackling outdated clichés about motherhood.
