Women of Steel

July 3 4:15 pm

Feature Documentary | 2020 | Australia | 56 min | Directed by Robynne Murphy

An inspirational documentary about the Wollongong women who – unable to get work at the local steelworks – band together as the Jobs for Women Campaign, and take on the giant steelworks operators and heart of the town, BHP.

The campaign would run from 1980 until 1994, and the film traces this story against the background of social change that marked the era, the wider women’s movement and the changing role of women in the home.

Telling the story of the women’s struggle through interviews and archive footage, Women of Steel makes for powerful viewing.

Like recent documentaries Brazen Hussies (2020) and Girl’s Can’t Surf (2021), Women of Steel is essential viewing for anyone interested in women’s – and Australian – history.
