Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and Legendary Tapes
July 5 8:00 pm
Feature Documentary | 2020 | UK | 98 min | Directed by Caroline Catz | Rook Films
Telling the story of electronic music pioneer – best known for her work on the Dr Who theme – the film shifts between documentary, drama-documentary, and a sonic conversation between Derbyshire and musician Cosey Fanni Tutti.
Using posthumously discovered recordings by pioneering electronic musicians Delia Derbyshire, which have been sampled by Cosey Fanni Tutti both to create the soundtrack and to establish an aesthetic connection between the two women, alongside archive footage and dramatized footage, Catz’s film is a beautifully realised work.
Derbyshire – a visionary and non-conformist – makes for a fascinating and deeply inspiring subject, the recreations offer some insight into Derbyshire’s creative processes, as well as her treatment as a woman, while colleagues and collaborators offer additional insights.
