The Lumiere Brothers presented the first public film exhibition in Paris in 1895. Shortly thereafter the first film review was written. In the more than 120 years that have passed since then, film and film criticism have grown and developed in parallel, but never more rapidly than in the last 20.
In this freewheeling discussion, noted film critic Travis Johnson will talk about the changing face of criticism as both a discipline and a profession, taking in the contraction of traditional media, the rise of the citizen critic, the impact of streaming and VOD distribution, and the monolithic shadow of Rotten Tomatoes.
