The world of competitive jigsaw puzzling might seem like an unusual backdrop for a film – which it is – but it provides this lovely drama with a focussed concentration that zeros right in to the core of the characters.
Agnes is a wife and mother who loves her family, who takes great pride in her role at home but who is feeling that perhaps there is just something else out there. She’s reserved and lacks some confidence but there’s an itch that she just can’t seem to scratch. After her birthday party she unwraps a present - a jigsaw puzzle - and proceeds to give it a go and discovers she has a particular knack for what it takes. As she undertakes more and more puzzles, she decides to test her skill and meets Robert, an enigmatic inventor – a meeting that will change both of their lives forever.
Puzzle is a beautifully understated character and relationship study and very rewarding big screen viewing with great performances all round, a restrained directorial and penned by Oscar nominated Oren Moverman, whose writing just lets things unfold.
Screens with the short film The Sound Silence Makes.
