With an approach that marries traditional narrative episodes with documentary footage, Song of Granite celebrates the life and music of traditional Irish folk singer Joe Heaney.
Enigmatic and complex, Joe Heaney was one of the greats of traditional Irish ‘sean nós’ singing. Shaped by the myths, fables, and songs of his upbringing in the west of Ireland, his emergence as a gifted artist came at a personal cost. Song of Granitefeatures performances from Colm Seoighe, Macdara Ó’Fátharta and Jaren Cerf. There are contributions from contemporary Irish musicians Lisa O’Neill and Damien Dempsey and from sean nós singers Micheál O’Confhaola and Pól Ó Ceannabháin.
Song of Granitefeatures the beautiful black and white cinematography of Richard Kendrick and is a must for lovers of music.
Song of Granitewas Ireland’s submission for the Foreign Language Oscar 2018. The film was directed by Pat Collins whose previous credits include Silence, 1916 andLiving in a Coded Land.
