Madeline (a brilliant performance from newcomer Helena Howard) is a gifted young actress working with a theatre group led by Evangeline (Molly Parker). Amongst the usual theatrical training and drama games played with the group something else seems to be developing, and it becomes slowly clear that Madeline is dominating the imminent theatrical production as well as the lives of those around her, while clashing with her mother Regina (Miranda July).
What follows is an exceptional coming of age film framed through a narrative that explores performance, charisma, power, and belonging.
Visually stunning, director and writer Josephine Decker’s film pushes the conventions of the coming of age film, creating a unique work in the process.
“Grade: A” – Indie Wire
