Winner Special Jury prize Sundance 2018
Official Selection: Berlin FF
From her childhood, growing-up in Sri Lanka and South London, exploring music, art and ideas, to global stardom, M.I.A’s career has been astonishing. In Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. director Stephen Loveridge brings together a true wealth of visual material to tell her story – much from Matangi’s personal videos; she studied documentary film making.
Deftly combining biographical, artistic, and political strands of her life, Loveridge creates a powerful work that explores far more than the artist’s pop music, examining the political and social contexts that are central to M.I.A.’s work.
“The film comes from a place of deep admiration for M.I.A., but unlike more fawning biographies, it makes a convincing case that this admiration is well earned.” – The Guardian
