In recent years we’ve seen and screened some of the best political documentaries produced around the world. From citizen journalism, to environmental comment, to issues of race, gender and poverty, these issues are on the surface of Rev’s programming and business ethics – which is why this The Monopoly of Violence is such a great find for us.

This elegant and eloquent work explores the nature of police responses to recent French “yellow-vest” riots and examines how “as anger and resentment grow in the face of social inequalities, many citizen-led protests are being repressed with an ever-increasing violence.”

Through rigorous academic political analysis and argument as well as jaw-dropping close-quarters riot footage, this timely and powerful work examines not just police strategies but the strategies of power that deploys them.

Taking its title from sociologist and political economist Max Weber, who wrote that the state establishes a “monopoly on violence” by claiming the legitimate use of force, this absorbing and sophisticated documentary is right on and of the moment and a must for lovers of politics and documentary.

Screens with the short film Inferno.
