If there’s one thing that COVID has given to cinema over in just a little over a year it’s the opportunity for filmmakers and screen artists to tell compact stories to examine the small and intimate moments and relationships. This lovely film gives us those simple, beautiful and profound moments in aces and aims itself at every emotion you can let go in just over 90 minutes.
John and his young son Michael don’t have a lot in the way of material positions, but as a sole parent, John and his son have a very special and close relationship – but circumstances beyond their control force them to re-evaluate their futures and their time together. From the outset, this wonderfully natural film turns stereotypes on their head as very early on, the film flips from one story expectation to a completely other, and from there we move into very deep emotional territory.
Great tenderness, enormous heart and well played and directed by all, Nowhere Special is a rare film and one for the times.
Screens with the short film Two Sands.
