Pioneering cult Scottish band Mogwai have pursued their own creative path, staying true to their musical roots, and crafting their own unique sounds across a string of critically acclaimed albums.

Director and photographer Antony Crook’s documentary follows the band as they record their tenth album, while also looking back on their career.

This is a slowly unfolding work that takes place before the camera. Under Crooks’ direction there is an inquisitive exploration of the band here that builds into a fascinating whole.

One for both fans of the band, whose 2024 Australian tour opened in Perth, alongside anyone interested in contemporary independent music.

“Most of all, If the Stars Had a Sound leaves the viewer with a warm feeling that is a product of the rolling Scottish landscapes; the band’s essential modesty; the changing archival textures, from fan-held DV camcorders to slickly produced TV concerts; and the quietly held emotion suffusing it all. The love continues, indeed.” – Scott Macaulay, Filmmakermagazine.com

“[it] focuses on the connections made through their music, the people who have been impacted both small and large. For a band whose sound feels like a wave washing over you, it’s lovely.” – Jenny Nulf, The Austin Chronicle
