Winner Best Film, Best Dressmaker, Best Soundtrack Venice Film Festival 2020
Director Susanna Nicchiarelli (Rev regulars will remember her previous movie Nico 1988) returns with a punky biopic of Karl Marx’s youngest daughter Eleanor (Romola Garai, familiar from BBC’s Emma).
Tracing Eleanor Marx’s life from the death of her father onwards, through her politics and activism as well her personal life, Miss Marx paints a fascinating portrait of the socialist and feminist.
Star Romola Garai delivers a commendable performance, while Nicciarelli’s film creates a visually stunning representation of Victorian Britain, from factory gates to lavish living rooms.
The punk songs that blast on the soundtrack add another depth to this biopic, which shifts between moments of activism and representations of Eleanor’s day to day life spent moving through her friends and social circle, which includes Fredrich Engels (John Gordin Sinclai, Nico 1988), and her difficult relationship with Edward Aveling (Patrick Kennedy, The Queen’s Gambit).
Screens with the short film Greenmeadows.
