We love magical realism and fly that flag rather high year to year – and 2022 is no exception with several titles that take the bold step into the wilder sides of the imaginative experience.

Heavens Above is one such title that not only bends expectation but film form.

Walking a finely drawn line between oddball black comedy and something more gritty, this classic film fest title tells three stories about three individuals who are suddenly blessed with the inexplicable appearance of an iridescent and sometimes unwelcome halo.

Despite all efforts, there’s no altering God’s will as they attempt to carry on life despite the strange occurrence.

The stories tell the tale of the impact of these ‘miracles’ in the medieval sense and what happens to the film’s heroes living in a post-communist society that, after half a century of atheism, re-learns about Christianity.

Today’s societies are like the pagan ones of early Christianity when the idols of the previous period, communism, coexisted with the new religion.

This vivid milieu, filled with superstition, a fundamental misunderstanding of the Faith and exaggerations, often creates comical and tragic situations in the lives of the six characters whose fates we follow from 1993 through 2001 to 2026.
