Feature Documentary/2022/USA/98min/Directed by KD Davison
Fragments of Paradise tells the story of Jonas Mekas.
Arriving in the US as a displaced person following the Second World War, through to his life as a poet, writer on cinema – and especially experimental and underground film, filmmaker and a key figure in the dissemination of alternative cinema.
Quite simply if it wasn’t for Mekas there probably wouldn’t be cinema as we know it.
An artform he championed for seventy years, Mekas’s gorgeous diary films are laced with interviews with Martin Scorsese, Jim Jarmusch, John Waters, Peter Bogdanovich and many others, and Fragments of Paradise becomes an affirmation of the influence of experimental, visionary and underground cinema on subsequent film.
