Thirteen-year-old Lena is charged with looking after her baby sister following the death of her mother, meanwhile her father is sinking into depression.
Simultaneously a strange fungal parasite known as Mycel is spreading, transforming the world around Lena.
What follows in Limmer’s debut feature combines a kind of unsettling psychological horror that worms into the viewer’s psyche with post-Lynchian surrealism.
Calmly paced and beautifully shot in black and white, the film imagines new manifestations of environmental/biological horror, creating an uncanny nightmarish world in which everything that is familiar slowly unwinds.
Developing a nuanced and meticulous aesthetic on a shoestring budget, Limmer’s film offers an intriguing take on environmental, and human, transformation.
