The Isle of Berneray covers an area of approximately 10km2, one of only a handful of inhabited islands in the Outer Hebrides, and a land where Gaelic can still be heard.
Using archival home movies showing the Isle of Berneray and the people who live there, alongside interviews with the island’s inhabitants, MacDonald and MacKinnon create a beautifully realised and poignant portrait of the unique community.
The film’s score that combines ambient sounds and hauntingly beautiful Gaelic folk songs makes the perfect accompaniment to the images of the stone houses, crofts, waterfronts, and sea, and the voices of the people who call the wind-swept island home.
