Winner of Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Best Director Prize, Thessaloniki Documentary Festival’s Golden Alexander and FIORSCI award, and Best Nordic Documentary Gotenburg Film Festival, A House Made of Splinters is an observational documentary filmed in a children’s home in the Eastern Ukraine.
In this poor, war-worn community, the children wait to learn what will become of them in the orphanage, will they be returned to parents and families who may be barely coping, or sent to foster care?
What is so wonderfully poetic in this documentary is the resilience and maturity of these children as they navigate a world that they sometimes understand much more authentically than the adults that surround them, or otherwise.
Letting events unfold, creating a deeply moving and utterly heartbreaking documentary, A House Made of Splinters offers a powerful portrait of the social workers and children in their care.
So beautiful. Utterly unforgettable.
