Jon Hewitt, who recently impressed audiences with Acolytes (2008), strikes pay dirt again with this rapid paced Sydney noir. Divided into a series of chapters the film takes part of its narrative structure from hardboiled literature, but gives this a uniquely Australia spin.  Taking its visual cues from experimental cinema as much as genre film, Darklovestory finds moments of luminescent wonder in the everyday aspects of the city’s neon night, which serves to punctuate the narrative flow.

But enough about the art. This film takes place over one night in the Sydney inner city suburb of Kings Cross and tells the story of a couple utterly immersed in the criminal milieu, apparently drowning even as they search for an escape. In true noir fashion everybody here is a player working an angle, allegiances are formed and broken according to circumstance, and everyone is out for themselves.

A true labour of love, Hewitt self funded the movie, and the rough-cut won best film, actor and actress at Melbourne Underground Film Festival 2006. Now completed, this shot from the hip movie is a classic of guerrilla style genre cinema. Hewitt’s intense yet artistic directorial style is the perfect medium for this movie.
