“Proved to be one of the most moving experiences at the Sundance Film Festival. It reminds one of the joy of sitting in an audience of strangers while everyone laughs hysterically” – Quentin Tarantino
Described as an autobiography in three parts, Anywhere USA offers a trio of stories from small town America. These tales examine family, friendship, love and belonging, but they also explore such essential minutiae of life as facial hair, sun beds, tooth fairies, and pistachios. Chusy has an eye and ear for the foibles of human nature and his film offers an unflinching observation of the genuine needs that lie at the heart of the human condition. Anywhere USA moves from the poignant to the absurd to the comic, often in the space of a single scene, as one of the characters observes: “life don’t follow a straight line”.
The film is cast with exceptionally talented non-professional actors who bring a sense of genuine authenticity to their roles and the stories they are telling. Rich in plaintive images – a bowling ball rolling around an empty race trace, a pink cardboard love heart laying in the street, children in a bookshop – and with a fantastic score that moves seamlessly from opera to country tinged guitar to Devendra Banhart this is cinema at its best. Anywhere USA is a truly exceptional work, lovingly crafted by genuine independent filmmakers.
