While some evangelists and fundamentalists have condemned the Harry Potter books and movies for leading young readers to the dark side of the occult, this absorbing film finds a rather different response. Alongside running websites, attending signings and reading groups there is a growing Harry Potter subculture that includes the hilarious Brad Neely who has written a new more scabrous version of Potter, and the Wizard Rock scene, with fans (some as young as 4) forming bands such as Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys, who write songs about the literary creation’s world. These bands find new depth to the familiar characters, as well as celebrate the pleasures of reading and literature for legions of teenage fans.
Alongside these stories, the film examines the over zealous corporate response to fans and the power of young fans to defend themselves. We Are Wizards is as much about the pleasures of creativity and fandom as it is the boy wizard.
Under-15s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please note the film features occasional use of coarse language.
