Three Hams In A Can

Film Synopsis

Three Hams In A Can
Director:
Kenta McGrath
Year: 2009
Country: Australia
Duration: 79 minutes
Web: www.threehamsinacan.com

A documentary about the real Tokyo derive, three musicians -  Chris Cobilis, Predrag Delibasic and Stina -  travel to the floating world in order to perform their music crafted from laptops, guitars and keyboards. In Tokyo they perform alongside underground luminaries such as Bon No Kubo, the Tokyo Superstars, Seven That Spells, and others. Taking its aesthetic chops from the minimalist / maximalist nature of the experimental music created by the musicians and those they perform alongside Three Hams In A Can adopts a low key approach to documenting the tour and the almost familiar yet slightly different world the travelling musicians enter. As one drunken man states “There is a saying in Japanese: One life. One meeting”

Part music documentary, part home movie, part meditation on the nature of friendship, this gentle, humorous film sees McGrath following his subjects to concerts, to after show drinks, to tourist sites, and to a barbeque in their honour. Along the way no chairs are thrown, no hotel rooms are smashed, and nobody is arrested.
