Neil Innes was a founder member of the legendary British proto-psychedelic Dadaist group the Bonzo Dog Band, a long-term collaborator with Monty Python’s Flying Circus, and the songwriter behind The Ruttles. The composer of such classic songs as The Urban Spaceman, Neil Innes’ musical voice embraces both the absurd and the poignant, often simultaneously.
Kearns’ documentary features former Pythons’ Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and John Cleese as well as The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening, alongside a suitably bemused Innes who resolutely refuses to bask in any spotlight. Alongside many interviews The Seventh Python features numerous versions of Innes’ songs including the Australian version of The Philosopher’s Song.
As Weird Al Yankovic states, “Without question one of the finest documentaries I’ve seen about Neil Innes so far this year!“ Exactly.
