For the uninitiated Labyrinth is quite the most unusual movie.

Perhaps most famous for David Bowie’s turn as Gareth the Goblin King, it’s Henson’s large (and small) scale puppets that steal the show in a film that very much a passion project for Henson.

Sarah is left home to babysit her younger brother whose incessant crying is getting more than a little irritating. In telling him a story she inadvertently conjures the Goblin King who steals the young boy. It’s her mission to penetrate the Goblin King’s world - the labyrinth - to retrieve her brother. In the process she encounters all manner of strange beings and beasts - all of whom spring from Henson’s incredibly fertile imagination.

It’s hard not to admire the incredible detail in every shot here - as well as wonder at the almost psychedelic environment Henson places his characters in. It’s also impossible to resist some of the oddball humour as the characters exchange insults, quips of all kinds and a lot of verbal fencing that gives them such great life and character.
