For those that have seen them perform live The Cambodian Space Project are an utterly joyous celebration of Cambodian pop music, led by vocalist Srey Thy and Australian musician Julien Poulson the band have gained an international cult following.
The Cambodian Space Project: Not Easy Rock ‘n’ Roll explores the band’s musical roots in the great pop songs that emerged from the country in the sixties and early seventies, and their own musical journey. But this isn’t just the story of the band, but also a story about the tempestuous cross cultural romance between Julien Poulson and Srey Thy, an exploration of creativity, relationships and the musical heritage of a country.
Cambodian based director Marc Eberle’s credits include work for HBO, BBC, and the Discovery Channel, amongst many others, and he spent five years filming the band (as well as directing a three of their music videos), gaining access to all aspects of their lives and the creative process. The results are fascinating and the music is a true pleasure.
