Theory of Obscurity: A Film About the Residents

Dir: Don Hardy Jr.
Year: 2015
Country: USA
Duration: 87mins

Official Selection: SxSW

With their heads hidden behind giant eyeball masks, visionary music and unique aesthetics The Residents are perhaps one of the most fascinating and unusual bands of all time.

Emerging in the San Fran Bay Area in the seventies, the band would go on to carve a unique and deeply influential niche in contemporary music and popular culture, releasing a stream of critically acclaimed albums and producing some of the most visually stunning experimental live performances ever realised. But, as fans will know, in our star-studded, celebrity culture The Residents are unique because the identities of the group remain unknown, with the quartet always appearing with masks hiding their faces.

Now – thanks to director Don Hardy Jr – the band are celebrated in this joyous and inspiring documentary.

In Theory of Obscurity associates and collaborators, members of the Cryptic Corp. and celebrity fans such as The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, magician Penn Jillette, artist Gary Panter and many others exploring the legend that is The Residents.

Punctuated with clips from the band’s live performances, opera, movies (including the unrealised Vileness Fats), CD-Roms and videos, Theory of Obscurity is a celebration of the band for the initiated and a chance for those unfamiliar with the group to enter the beautifully surreal world of The Residents.
