Winner AWGIE Award Best Documentary Script
A fascinating, poignant, and engaging personal documentary from filmmaker Gillian (My Life Without Steve, Our Park) Leahy, Baxter And Me is a film about the director and her love of dogs. But more than this it is an autobiography told through dogs.
From her childhood pets to the present day, dogs have played central roles in the director’s life. But the film is about far more than having-pets, with the director providing her own no-nonsense narration, the film also tells one woman’s story of growing-up in Australia, of experiencing the women’s movement and feminism, of the empowerment offered by filmmaking, of female friendships, and of relationships with men.
But always, underpinning everything else, of the unique and ongoing companionship offered by dogs and the way in which our canine family members provide a way into measuring our lives and the values that shape them.
