Official Selection: SXSW
Revelation favourite Jennifer Kroot (To Be Takei and It Came From Kuchar) returns with an absorbing documentary of San Francisco writer Armistead Maupin, author Tales of the City.
With nine volumes in the series published, covering the mid-seventies to the present, Tales of the City spawned a TV series and cult following. Readers were drawn to the lives – both gay and straight – that were essayed in these books and many were inspired by the world they created.
Through interviews with Maupin, as well as Neil Gaiman, Laura Linney, Amy Tan and Sir Ian McKellen, Kroot creates a movie, which explores Maupin’s life – from his conservative youth, to his growth into a mature, witty writer – his creative process, and ongoing cultural influence.
More than this, The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin is a celebration of the writer, his life, and the cultures of San Francisco.
