Telling the story of Radio Birdman – one of the key protopunk rock bands to emerge in the mid-seventies – Descent Into The Maelstrom is a documentary that offers a journey deep into the underbelly of Australian music. Mixing thundering power-pop with the bite of 70s Detroit punk Birdman burst onto the music scene in so doing creating a whole new Australian rock sound.
Taking their swaggering-rock through a nightscape of bars and confronting unsuspecting audiences with their volume and power Radio Birdman changed the face of rock music, influenced a generation of sneering youths and recorded a string of great songs including the classic LP Radios Appear.
Talking head interviews and archive combine to offer a vivid portrait of the band, the world they inhabited, and their role in Australian independent music.
