Rolf de Heer is arguable one of Australia’s most idiosyncratic filmmakers. With an enormously diverse body of work behind him, one of de Heer’s earliest and most famous works is the legendary Bad Boy Bubby.

In what is an utterly unique vision Bubby is a 30 year-old man-child whose been imprisoned by his mother who’s fooled him into thinking the world outside is a toxic and uninhabitable wasteland. As a result Bubby is completely unaware of the world that actually exists outside his grubby prison room – but Bubby isn’t going to be a prisoner his entire life.

As one thing leads to another Bubby finds himself free in the real world and can look at it with completely fresh eyes with an innocence and purity. It’s that naivety that makes Bubby somewhat of an underground legend and leads to some of the most memorable moments committed to celluloid in this country.

Unquestionably one of the defining films of the decade Bad Boy Bubby marked a great “anything is possible” moment for Australian cinema and is still a beacon for filmmakers wanting to do it their way.
